Butterfields Candy Company Celebrates its 92nd Anniversary!

February 2016 | Nashville, North Carolina: This year marks the 92nd anniversary of Butterfields – one of the nation’s oldest artisan candy makers. In 1924, the company first manufactured a tangy and fragrant hard candy for the holidays. The candy quickly generated a loyal following – first in the local Eastern North Carolina area, and ultimately, across the United States, Mexico, Canada, and abroad.
Over the years, the company changed hands multiple times and even temporarily closed its doors in 2009 due to the economic recession. Dena Manning - once a loyal customer -took a leap of faith and bought the company in 2012. Hailing from a family of entrepreneurial risk-takers and female business owners, she was in her element and committed herself to the success of Butterfields Candy Company while adhering to the old fashioned practices that make the candy so unique. The company continuously updates the film used for packaging in order to optimize moisture control levels, keeping the candy fresh and moisture-free.

Consistent BIG Flavor and Quality – The Butterfields Bud

The true secret to Butterfields Buds lies in its consistently intense fruit flavor and high quality ingredients. The candies are made the old fashioned way - by hand. Each batch is made in a large, vintage copper kettle - just like when they were first created in 1924. Although it takes more time and care to make candy this way, the result is a delicious treat worth every second. Delicate essences of fruit nectar can be found in each morsel of candy. Under the careful eyes of master confectioners, a sliver of coconut is nestled into each bud, which is then topped off with a sweet dusting of sugar. Butterfields offers a trifecta of flavor: fruit + a hint of coconut + sugar dusting. The result? A candy with unmatched flavor and texture, leaving you with the impression of enjoying a fresh, juicy piece of fruit right
off the tree. Butterfields Candies offer classic Peach, Key Lime, Lemon, Honeybell Orange, Cherry, and the newest bud, Muscadine Grape.

2016 Plan for Success

Dena started small when she reopened the company in 2012, producing the three most popular flavors: Peach, Key Lime, and Lemon. She has big plans for this local gem - beyond the success of her business, Manning is motivated by a sense of duty to restore a part of the state’s culinary fabric. “I resurrected this company because if I had not done this, part of this state’s heritage was going to be lost forever. The timeless and popular Peach Buds would have just vanished.” This year, Dena will participate in many local, regional, and national specialty food shows to showcase the finest in artisanal hard confections to be found in today’s market and promote the newest buds flavor—Muscadine Grape. Made with natural grape oils and colored using wine crystals, the new flavor has a unique wine finish. The flavor will debut in the 2 oz snack option.

The candy is hand crafted in copper kettles, using the same old recipe and adhering to the same high-quality standards that true candy connoisseurs love. “We’re the original makers of the classic Peach Bud hard candy,” says Dena. “The Peach Bud’s delicate bouquet of fresh, ripe, peachy zing, mixed with a sweet dab of smooth, creamy, coconut, is a perfect combination of flavors, making it a gourmet favorite for almost a century.” Lucky for customers, Peach is not the only famous flavor—Butterfields Candies boasts a variety of Buds, each capturing the true essence of your favorite fruits, including Key Lime, Lemon, Honeybell Orange, Cherry, and our newest flavor, Muscadine Grape.

The History of Butterfields

Butterfields has endured some tough times over the last 91 years. In the recent economic downturn, Butterfields was forced to close its doors, almost going out of business. When Dena Manning took over leadership in 2012, she completely renovated the factory, rehired many its old staff, and created new jobs to bring the company back to life. Butterfields is still a family-owned and operated business—Dena is dedicated to breathing new life into an old brand.

The Secret of Butterfields Buds

“Buds” are the company’s signature product—tiny morsels of sweet, fruity goodness. Butterfields Candies makers are faithful to using the age-old recipes used since the company first opened, as well as to utilizing the best ingredients on the market. Under Dena’s leadership, Butterfields Buds remain the staple candy they always were.

Butterfields Peach Buds are 100% dairy free, gluten free, and made with pure sugar - made and packaged in the United States.
